TORONTO, February 24, 2022 —Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana, a world-leading international producer, distributor, and licensor of children’s animated and live-action content, is helping to promote the outreach efforts of Polar Bears International, the only nonprofit organization dedicated solely to wild polar bears and Arctic sea ice. Inspired by Nelvana’s iconic polar bear logo and the studio’s 50th anniversary, the effort to help raise awareness about the effects of climate change on polar bears kicks off February 27 in celebration of the nonprofit’s International Polar Bear Day and will continue throughout the year with additional events and initiatives, including Polar Bears International’s Arctic Sea Ice Day on July 15 and Polar Bear Week in early November.

With the goal of igniting conversations surrounding climate change, Canada’s most celebrated icon, the CN Tower, will light up the sky after sunset on February 27 in blue, a colour inspired by both the Polar Bears International and Nelvana logos. Nelvana is also supporting Polar Bears International’s outreach to science centres and zoos across North America, in an effort to educate and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. On International Polar Bear Day, Toronto’s Ontario Science Centre, Vancouver’s Science World and Greater Vancouver Zoo will be hosting a mix of both free-to-attend virtual and in-person events and activities, including polar bear themed colouring and activity sheets, screenings, and the chance to win polar bear themed prizes such as Kids Can Press published books Polar Animals, One Well: The Story of Water on Earth and Beastly Puzzle. More partners and events will be announced soon.

“Nelvana’s polar bear logo is undeniably recognizable to the generations across the globe who have enjoyed our TV shows and films throughout the past 50 years, and it has become a major component of our studio’s legacy,” said Pam Westman, President of Nelvana. “Polar Bears International has made tremendous strides in helping educate and advocate for polar bears, and we are delighted to be supporting their efforts to help reach new audiences and educate the next generation of polar bear advocates.”

International Polar Bear Day coincides with the time of year when polar bear moms and cubs are snug in their dens. This year’s event focuses on the need to protect denning families across the Arctic and to highlight the tools that Polar Bears International and scientists are developing to find and map den locations to help ensure moms and their cubs aren’t disturbed, therefore safeguarding their future.
