For Immediate Release

TORONTO, June 1, 2021 – Global News is proud to announce today its new scholarship program that provides renewable entrance scholarships for Black students who will pursue post-secondary studies in journalism. The initiative sees an overall investment of $140,000 to a number of prominent journalism programs at well-respected institutions across the country. Recipients will also have the opportunity to receive mentoring throughout their studies from seasoned Black journalists who currently work for Global News.

“Our organization recognizes that we have a responsibility to increase the representation of Black journalists in newsrooms across the country,” said Ward Smith, Senior Vice President, Global News. “In continuing this work, we want to encourage Black students to pursue post-secondary studies in the field and to ensure they are connected with relatable mentors that can offer support throughout their careers.”

“We need Black journalists in newsrooms to amplify and contextualize stories in the community and to paint a picture that is not driven by stereotypes,” said Dave D’Oyen, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead, Corus Entertainment. “The scholarship program aims to ensure that Black students feel empowered to pursue journalism and are eventually able to elevate issues that are of great concern to the Black community.”

The program was partly inspired by joint calls to action from the Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) and Canadian Journalists of Colour (CJOC), and is part of a comprehensive, multi-year Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Action Plan at Corus that aims to support DEI in all areas of the company’s business and content as well as industry partnerships. Building diverse representation in our industry talent pipeline will mean diverse representation is sustainable for the future—at Corus and across the industry as a whole.

In addition to this, Global News is proud to announce a new scholarship for Black, Indigenous and Racialized (BIR) students in partnership with the Radio Television Digital News Foundation (RTDNF). The Global News BIR Scholarship is open to all BIR students registered in an accredited journalism program in Canada.
