OTTAWA, July 2, 2019 – With Canadians set to elect a new federal government this fall, Global News is announcing its national political affairs program The West Block will extend its current season through the summer months as part of enhanced election coverage from the network. Through intimate and challenging interviews, the program will explore all the key issues leading up to the fall campaign period. The West Block airs across Canada on Global Television, every Sunday morning (10 a.m. PT/MT, 11 a.m. CT/ET, 12 p.m. AT) and Sunday night (11:30pm local time).

“Although the House isn’t in session, the election doesn’t take a break, and neither will The West Block,” said Mercedes Stephenson, host of The West Block. “This summer we’ll take viewers behind-the-scenes and help them get to know the people behind the politics. We’ll go off the Hill, and have candid conversations with MPs before the intensity of the election ramps up into the fall.”

Mercedes Stephenson is Global News’ Ottawa Bureau Chief and the host of the The West Block. Distinguishing herself as one of Canada’s foremost voices in political and accountability journalism, Stephenson has interviewed all the big names in contemporary Canadian politics while covering major political events, political policy and controversy. Stephenson also serves as a national columnist, providing her expertise on all Global News media platforms. Based in Ottawa, Stephenson has reported on Canadian news from around the world, including such locales as Latvia, France, Washington D.C., Afghanistan, Niger and Japan.

“We’re pleased to extend The West Block through the summer and provide much-needed additional context to audiences as the fall election approaches,” said Kenton Boston, Vice-President, National and Network News, Global News. “There’s no better host to guide viewers through election season than Mercedes Stephenson. Her ability to make headlines through her insightful interviews is a testament to her ability as a journalist, and makes The West Block the must-watch program for campaign defining moments.”

The West Block is available across all Global News platforms: TV, radio and digital. The show airs nationally every Sunday morning and Sunday night on Global Television, is broadcast every Sunday on all Global News Radio news-talk stations, is available as a podcast on most major podcast platforms and can be viewed online via full episodes and clips on Globalnews.ca.
