GLOBAL NEWS WEATHER SPECIALIST MIKE SOBEL TO RETIRE AFTER 25 YEARS WITH GLOBAL EDMONTON

For Immediate Release

EDMONTON, November 10, 2022 – After 25 years with Global Edmonton, beloved weather specialist and co-host of Global News Morning Mike Sobel, is announcing his retirement. Mike’s last broadcast will be on December 23.

Mike has been an integral part of Edmonton’s #1 rated Global News Morning (rated by Numeris) for over a quarter of a century. From becoming a viral sensation when he did a weather segment with a dog named Ripple that garnered international media attention, his epic Halloween costumes, hosting ITV’s Disney Afternoons, Four O’ Clock Rock and the Jeopardy-style quiz show, High-Q in the mid-eighties, to participating in endless community events, Mike’s ability to connect with viewers is legendary.

“After 43 years in the industry I have decided that now is the time to move on,” says Mike Sobel. “It sounds cliché, but it is very difficult to walk away from a job that never really felt like one, but I want to spend more time with my family and put a few more kilometers on my bike. Thank you to the viewers who have supported me over the years. Working at Global Edmonton has been a dream come true and I am extremely fortunate to have worked with some of the best people in the business.”

“Mike is a media legend in this city,” says Jim Haskins, Global Edmonton News Director and Station Manager. “He has done everything there is to do in radio and television. His versatility has enabled him to stay on top of his game for over a quarter century here at Global Edmonton. We thank Mike for being such a great team member and station ambassador. We will miss him a ton.”

Global Edmonton will give Mike a memorable send off during its local programming the week of December 19-23.
