For Immediate Release

TORONTO, October 19, 2023 – Global News is pleased to announce that veteran broadcaster, Heidi Petracek, will join Global National, starting on October 23, as its national correspondent based in Halifax. Heidi replaces long-time reporter, Ross Lord, who retired earlier this year.

Hailing from Saskatchewan, Heidi began her radio and TV career in her home province before reporting assignments took her to Calgary, Toronto, Corner Brook, St. John’s and, ultimately, Halifax. It’s in Nova Scotia and across Atlantic Canada that the power of Heidi’s reporting truly came into focus.

From countless federal and provincial elections to hurricanes and floods, Heidi possesses a great knowledge of, and love for, Atlantic Canada and the distinct communities that comprise it. She’s covered every major story touching the region in the past 20 plus years – from the aftermath of 9/11, fallout from the collapse of the Atlantic cod fishery, the Moncton RCMP shootings, and the tragic killings in Portapique and the resulting Mass Casualty Commission. Through it all, she’s consistently displayed empathy and respect in her work serving audiences with the highest standard of journalism.

“What stands out most about Heidi’s decades of reporting is her compassion for the people whose stories she’s sharing,” says Tristan Staddon, Global National Managing Editor. “Whether she’s connecting with Canadians on their best day or their worst, her commitment to reflecting their humanity in her journalism is unwavering. That’s something we truly value at Global National and we couldn’t be more proud to welcome her.”

“Heidi is an incredible addition to our Global National team, bringing a wealth of experience and deep connections to the community she is covering,” says Sonia Verma, Vice President National News. “We are thrilled to have her perspective and storytelling on our newscast.”

A highly respected journalist, Heidi was named “Media Person of the Year” by the Tema Conter Memorial Trust for her coverage of first responders’ experiences with PTSD in Canada. She’s also given her time in support of community organizations and charities in the Maritimes over the years, such as the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia, and the Epilepsy Association of the Maritimes.
