The animated series Braceface, produced by Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana, received an award for “Outstanding Children’s Programming – Series” at the 17th Annual Genesis Awards for its Vanity Fur episode. The Genesis Awards bestowed the award for “a timely anti-fur statement, delivered to a young audience in a cleverly conceived episode that deals with cruelty in fashion while touching on the themes of loyalty, friendship, moral conviction, and personal empowerment.”

Braceface addresses other real teen issues like peer pressure, puberty, divorce, shoplifting and crushes with humour and intelligence through the everyday challenges faced by 14-year-old Sharon Spitz, voiced by Alicia Silverstone. The top-rated Emmy-nominated series airs Monday to Friday, 5 – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 12:30 – 1 p.m. on ABC Family in the United States, and Monday to Friday, 5 – 5:30 p.m. on TELETOON in Canada.

The Genesis Awards are presented at a star-studded ceremony that honours members of the media and entertainment communities. Hosted this year for the first time by the Humane Society of the United States, the awards are presented by a host of celebrities such as James Cromwell, Amy Smart, Melissa Rivers, Shannon Elizabeth, Doris Roberts, Michelle Phillips, Chynna Phillips-Baldwin, Wendie Malick, Charlotte Ross, Michael Feinstein, Karle Warren, Matt Gallant, A.J. McLean, Linda Blair, Tippi Hedren, Catherine Oxenberg, Aisha Tyler, Kaley Cuoco and Amy Davidson. The one-hour edited special, airs on Animal Planet in the United States in early May and exposes millions of viewers to animal rights.
