Licensing and promotional opportunities available in all international territories on music-centric preschool property

(Toronto, Canada) Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana today issued a call for licensing and promotional partnerships on its newest preschool property, The Backyardigans. A co-production with Nickelodeon, The Backyardigans (20 x half hour) features musical adventures that help kids develop their imaginations and express themselves creatively as they sing and dance along with five new TV pals: Quick-moving penguin Pablo; mellow moose Tyrone; thrill-seeking, purple-spotted creature Uniqua; lady-like hippo Tasha and Austin, the new kangaroo on the block. For the Backyardigans gang, daily backyard play dates bring fantasy to life.

Each episode features four kid-friendly tunes suitable for sing-a-long. A typical episode could find the five friends embarking on a reggae-inspired pirate adventure or a hip-hop hoedown — with The Backyardigans, anything is possible!

The Backyardigans will be leveraged in the international market through Nelvana’s network of television sales executives, merchandising executives and top-notch licensees and promotional partners,” said Executive VP of Worldwide Merchandising Sid Kaufman. “It’s an ideal property for a comprehensive licensing program with strong music and interactivity themes woven throughout the fabric of the show.”

Nelvana is managing the property in international territories while partner Nickelodeon maintains all rights within the U.S. market. Negotiations are currently underway for a global master toy licensee and Nelvana is scouting for potential partners in music (DVDs and CDs), interactive, apparel, home furnishings and promotions with packaged goods companies. Nelvana plans to soft-launch product in spring 2006 with the main program push scheduled for fall 2006.

On the broadcast front, the show is slated to debut on Nick U.S. in October 2004 and Nelvana’s international sales team just inked a deal with Nickelodeon in the U.K., which plans to air The Backyardigans in Q4 2005. Further deals are currently on the table with major broadcasters in other territories.
