FOR MIPCOM 2002:
(Cannes, France) – New from Nelvana for MIPCOM 2002, comes a duo of top-of-the-line animated series designed for kids of all ages, all over the world. For the small set, Nelvana launches LITTLE CRITTER, a 40×12 minute animated series culled from the collection of over 70 classic kids books written and illustrated by the celebrated Mercer Mayer. For the bigger kids, there’s JACOB TWO-TWO, a 26×30 minute animated series based on Canada’s runaway best-selling kids book by Mordecai Richler.
Not to leave out other young audiences, Nelvana’s recently introduced BRACEFACE and CLONE HIGH also figure prominently on the MIPCOM menu.
NEW FROM NELVANA FOR MIPCOM 2002:
LITTLE CRITTER – After conquering the world of publishing with over 70 titles in its collection to date, LITTLE CRITTER is about to launch as a Nelvana-produced animated series for 2003. From the brilliantly inspired works of writer-artist Mercer Mayer, LITTLE CRITTER captures the heartwarming day-to-day world as seen through the eyes of a preschooler. A loving son and big brother, lead character Little Critter is filled with curiosity, imagination, resourcefulness and fun.
With love and support from Mom, Dad, Little Sister, Grandma, Grandpa, Gabby, Grasshopper, Spider and Mouse, Little Critter copes with the everyday challenges and first-time experiences of a preschooler growing up, including trying new food, learning good manners and connecting with Little Sister. For its debut season, LITTLE CRITTER will feature an array of ‘firsts’ that play a vitally important role in growing up, from the first sleepover to the first lightning storm. Produced for the preschool set, LITTLE CRITTER will be ready for delivery in 2003.
JACOB TWO-TWO – Among the most endearing and enduring of Canada’s homegrown children’s properties, renowned author Mordecai Richler’s multi award-winning book series comes to animated life for the first time. The youngest of five children, Jacob was nicknamed Two-Two because, as he admits: “As the littlest in my family, nobody hears what I say for the first time. They only pay attention if I say things two times!” Small for his age, Jacob nonetheless has a big heart and a heaping helping of determination.
As chronicled in Richler’s critically acclaimed collection of books, Nelvana’s JACOB TWO-TWO animated series features Jacob’s continuous run-ins with the world of adults, as our hero overcomes obstacles and grows in self-confidence. Targeting kids 6-12, JACOB TWO-TWO will be ready for delivery in May 2003.
Said Toper Taylor, President, International Distribution and Consumer Products for Nelvana: “We are hearing more and more from programmers and audiences alike, that the message matters in today’s kids entertainment. We take quality and social consciousness seriously at Nelvana, and both LITTLE CRITTER and JACOB TWO-TWO combine the best in animated entertainment with significant pro-social messages that address first-time experiences and building self-confidence.”
Returning Nelvana Highlights:
BRACEFACE – Starring and executive produced by film star Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, Batman & Robin), BRACEFACE follows the adventures of Sharon Spitz, an 8th grader who is dealing with the stress associated with having braces. All 14-year-old Sharon Spitz wants is to hang out with her friends, play with her dogs and cats, and survive the social maze of her first year of high school. And keep snobby Nina Harper away from her steady boyfriend. And hey, is it too much to ask for veggie burgers in the cafeteria? Sharon’s like most girls her age – full of passion and ambition and frustrated by the usual dose of annoying teenage problems. But she could totally cope if it weren’t for one teeny, tiny thing…
Thanks to a mysterious accident at the orthodontist’s office, Sharon’s braces do some pretty wild stuff! They tune in cell phone conversations, mess with answering machines, and even work as magnets, which would be cool, if she had any control over the dumb things. But instead, they really complicate her life. You try explaining why your braces have pinned you to your locker!
Despite the double-whammy of braces and puberty, Sharon manages to cling to her sanity and self-confidence, and even have a little fun once in a while – despite a curfew that is SO medieval. With best friends Maria and Connor by her side, Sharon faces all the challenges that life has to offer, and manages to turn her tin grin into a winning smile! But Sharon’s not the type to wallow in despair. With her newfound powers and confidence, Sharon turns her tin grin into a force to be reckoned with. BRACEFACE lets the audience walk a mile in a typical teenager’s shoes as they deal with real teen issues like peer pressure, puberty, divorce, shoplifting and of course… crushes.
CLONE HIGH – Airing in the U.S. on MTV this fall, CLONE HIGH is Nelvana’s hip animated series that is capturing audiences worldwide. The CLONE HIGH student body is a collection of young versions of historical figures, departed celebrities and every musician who ever flew in a small rickety plane in bad weather. These troubled clones have to face the pressures of being modern teenagers, while attempting to live up to the legacy of their larger-than-life genetic donors. The unique premise of CLONE HIGH allows viewers to explore questions of nature versus nurture, fate, predestination, history, and secret government conspiracies.
The star-studded roster of original voice talent includes: Donald Adeosun Faison (Clueless, Felicity, Scrubs) as Washington Carver; Nicole Sullivan (MAD TV) as Joan of Arc; Andy Dick (News Radio) as Mr. Sheepman; Christa Miller (Drew Carey Show) as Cleopatra; along with special guests Marilyn Manson, Tom Green and Michael James McDonald. Christopher Miller and Phil Lord are executive producers and creators of CLONE HIGH. Bill Lawrence, co-creator of “Spin City” and creator of “Scrubs” is also an executive producer. John Miller is executive producer, MTV. Jackie French, Jennifer Saltzgiver, and Geoff Suddleson are executives in charge of production for MTV.
CYBERCHASE – The most interactive series of its kind, CYBERCHASE features three Earth kids who travel to exciting, virtual vistas in cyberspace on eye-popping mathematical adventures. The kids use their problem-solving skills to foil the evil fiend Hacker’s mad quest to take over the cyberworld. Voiced by Christopher Lloyd and Gilbert Gottfried, CYBERCHASE features cyber-mysteries full of colourful and brilliant animation and a sly comic flair. In the world of cyberspace, a classic good versus evil battle rages! When the dastardly villain Hacker (Lloyd) launches a mad mission to conquer the virtual universe, Motherboard calls upon three Earth kids for help. Jackie, Matt and Inez travel from their real-world realm, along with the wisecracking cyber-bird Digit (Gottfried), to the colourful virtual vistas of cyberspace where they take on the bad guys in an all-out battle of wits. From tackling time in ancient Egyptian tombs to cracking codes in creepy caves, or making sense of numbers in a fractured fairy tale world, the CYBERCHASE heroes use minds, not muscles, to overcome obstacles everywhere. CYBERCHASE is produced by Thirteen/WNET New York and Nelvana. At MIPCOM, Nelvana is located at Stand # L5-5.
