Says producer Levy: “The Berenstain Bears is such a beloved book and television series, with a great blend of charm, wit and warmth. 21 Laps is thrilled to be collaborating with Walden and Nelvana in adapting and expanding it to the screen.”

“This feature film will be a fitting tribute to the Berenstain family who decades ago created what has become a truly classic property, etched in the hearts and minds of children and their families the world over,” comments Doug Murphy, President, Nelvana and General Manager, Corus Kids “We are excited to be involved in this collaborative project which will see the delightful and entertaining tales of the Bears finally hit the big screen.”

Published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, The Berenstain Bears are the bestselling character-based children’s books in history with over 260 million in sales. Since their creation in 1962 there have been 250 titles and the family has been featured in three television series since 1979.

“My mother, Jan, and I are more than delighted that three outstanding names in the field of family entertainment, Shawn Levy, Walden Media and Nelvana, have come together to create a Berenstain Bears feature film,” says Mike Berenstain. “We are thrilled that their plans for an innovative and ambitious production will bring our family’s work to a new medium and to new audiences. I know that my father, Stan, who passed away in 2005, would have been tickled pink that his very own bears were going to be ‘in the movies!’”

“The Berenstain Bears series has the heart, humor, and values that fit into the Walden library of family films. We look forward to bringing these treasured characters to life in a new way with 21 Laps and Nelvana,” says Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick.

TF1 will play a major role in creating synergies between the merchandising program and the broadcasting of the new 3-D series Babar – And the Adventures of Badou set to launch on TF1 in France in Fall 2010/Spring 2011. The series is now in production from Nelvana Studio and TeamTO in association with The Clifford Ross Company and 26 episodes (52 x 11 minute stories) are in the works. Playhouse Disney France is pre-buying the series to air in a second broadcast window. It will debut in North America on YTV in Canada. TF1 Licences will be the licensing agent for the property in France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Monaco, Andorra, Dom-Tom and French-speaking Switzerland.

The series will introduce King Babar’s eight-year-old grandson, Badou, a “one-elephant stampede”, bursting with a sense of adventure. He laughs often and has inherited his grandfather’s daring spirit, often plunging into a situation (or a hidden passage way or unexplored temple) fully confident that he can handle whatever he finds. To see his grandson rushing so enthusiastically into the world makes Babar feel as if he is discovering it anew for himself. Viewers will also meet a cast of new characters offering kid-friendly views of palace intrigue and comic jungle adventures.

"We are thrilled and very proud to be appointed Babar's agent by Nelvana and The Clifford Ross Company,” said Hubert Taieb, Head of TF1 Licences and Deputy General Manager of TF1 Enterprises. “This trans-generational and widely known icon will entice new fans, both children and parents alike, with the 3-D series broadcast on TF1. In collaboration with the rights holders, current licensees and future partners who will all share in these new adventures, we aim to position Babar as THE evergreen property."

“Nelvana is excited to bring Babar into the 21st century with a new 3-D TV series as well as a comprehensive licensing program from TF1. Babar is a cherished property in France and many other European countries and we are confident that our partnership with TF1 will bring him even more fame,” added Colin Bohm, Vice President and Managing Director, Nelvana Enterprises.

"I have loved and admired Babar and his world since my own childhood," said Clifford Ross, President of The Clifford Ross Company. "It is a continuing pleasure to bring this character, with its special combination of joy, playfulness and (ironically for an elephant!) humanistic values to a wider audience. To have done this with the blessing and enthusiasm of the de Brunhoff family is a source of great pride."
About The Clifford Ross Company
Founded in 1985 by artist Clifford Ross, The Clifford Ross Company focused during its early years on three properties: the works of Edward Gorey, Tom Swift - the boys’ adventure series, and Babar. After optioning the rights to Babar in 1986 directly from Laurent de Brunhoff and the de Brunhoff family, CRC entered into a working relationship with Nelvana on all aspects of the property. For over 20 years, the companies have worked together to produce both television and feature length movies featuring the Babar characters and to develop a Babar licensing program that is known throughout the world. In addition to his well-known work as a painter and photographer, and in conjunction with The Clifford Ross Company, he has written a screenplay based on Tom Swift which was purchased by Columbia Pictures, and collaborated with Jim Henson to develop projects based on the works of Edward Gorey.
The fun starts on Monday, November 3 with the debut of four new series SAMMY’S STORY SHOP, MAISY, GOFRETTE and ADVENTURES FROM THE BOOK OF VIRTUES, an entirely new season of perennial favorite, DRAGON, as well as new episodes of many other popular Qubo shows (see attached grid for specific airtimes). Qubo Channel will also roll-out a new schedule that serves different age groups at different times of the day and will now feature several series on a daily basis. All of Qubo’s shows will delight preschoolers and elementary school-aged children alike with engaging storylines that provide inspirational life lessons.

In addition to the four new series and new season of DRAGON, Qubo Channel will also debut premiere episodes of 3-2-1 PENGUNS, BABAR, MISS BG, MY FRIEND RABBIT, RUPERT, THEORDORE TUGBOAT and THE ZULA PATROL. And if that weren’t enough to keep them engaged and entertained, kids can now catch some of their favorite Qubo shows everyday as DRAGON, 3-2-1 PENGUINS! and JANE AND THE DRAGON are moving from their weekend-only time-slots to become daily series. Finally, Qubo Channel has revamped its programming schedule to better address children’s viewing patterns. Every day from 5 AM – 1 PM (ET), Qubo Channel will air programming for preschool age children while the shows airing from 1 PM- 12 AM are geared more towards children ages 6 and up. (Again see attached programming grid for details).

Here’s a closer look at what’s new for kids on Qubo Channel starting November 3:

SAMMY’S STORY SHOP – Airs daily at 5:30 AM (ET) Combining imaginative play with the magic of storytelling, SAMMY’S STORY SHOP brings best-selling and award-winning children’s books to life with animated video adaptations of classic children’s books, including such titles as Snowy Day, Make Way For Ducklings, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Tikki Tikki Tembo and The Napping House, among many others. Each episode opens with an animated introduction by Sammy, the Story-Chef extraordinaire. Using an imaginary magic pan and spoon, Sammy cooks up stories – two to three animated shorts - for his best friends Wiggly and Sharlene, to enjoy. The anthology series is produced by Scholastic Media, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company.

MAISY – Airs daily at 6:30 AM and 10:00 AM (ET)
Based on the award-winning books by the British author Lucy Cousins, this colorful and endearing animated series features Maisy, a lovable mouse with a nose for adventure. Joined by a colorful cast of friends, “Tallulah” the chicken, “Charlie” the crocodile, “Eddie” the elephant and “Cyril” the squirrel, Maisy is always up for trying new things and making discoveries that turn every day into something special. The series is distributed by NBC Universal.

GOFRETTE – airs daily at 7 AM and 10:30 AM (ET)
This animated preschool series makes its U.S. television premiere and chronicles the capers of an eccentric and inquisitive cat, Gofrette, and his friends who live in the colorful world of Zanimo. Gofrette’s serendipity and out-of-the-box spirit teach children wonderful lessons about optimism and resilience. The series is jointly produced by Canadian-based Zoe Mae Productions and Subsequence Entertainment and is based on the best selling books from Doris Brasset and Fabienne Michot. PorchLight Entertainment is the international distributor of GOFRETTE, excluding Asia and Canada.

ADVENTURES FROM THE BOOK OF VIRTUES – airs daily at 3:30 PM and 9 PM (ET) The classic animated stories in this series are adapted from the best-selling book The Book of Virtues by former Secretary of Education William J. Bennett. Drawn from Greek mythology, American folktales, European fairy tales, African folklore, and more, the time-honored stories are designed to enlighten, inspire and spark the imagination, with each episode illustrating a central theme such as honesty, courage, responsibility, friendship and compassion. The series is produced by PorchLight Entertainment in association with KCET/Hollywood.

DRAGON _- airs daily at 9 AM and 12:30 PM (ET)
Based on the books by best-selling Scholastic children's author Dav Pilkey (author of the popular Captain Underpants series), DRAGON stars a kindhearted blue dragon who is friendly and helpful, but tends to see things from a much different perspective than most of us--and that's when the fun begins. Set in a colorful world populated by a menagerie of animal pals, the series playfully explores themes that are universally identifiable to children: wanting a friend, being afraid of the dark, and trying new things. This season, Dragon’s adventures include concocting an unusual lemonade recipe for his lemonade stand, resisting the urge to open a package that arrives two days before his birthday and what to do on a picnic when you forgot to assign someone to bring food or games! DRAGON is provided by Scholastic.
