Corus Television
Corus Entertainment is a leading specialty and pay TV broadcaster with ownership and operation of 17 television channels. The success of our niche-focused television brands is built on strong partnerships, compelling content and an expertise in consumer insights-based research.
Corus Entertainment‘s television assets include: YTV, Treehouse, Nickelodeon (Canada) and TELETOON (50%) which collectively have the highest Kids 2 – 11 audiences of any broadcaster in Canada; W Network, Cosmopolitan TV, VIVA, CMT (Canada), DUSK and Telelatino; Movie Central, western Canada’s pay TV service, with nine multiplex channels including HBO Canada; three local over-the-air television stations and Corus Custom Networks advertising services for television.
Corus plays a major role in the creation of Canadian content that succeeds both domestically and internationally. Through funding initiatives such as the Corus Made with Pay Fund, Corus invests in acclaimed feature films and television series including drama series like Durham County, Slings & Arrows and ReGenesis and Oscar-nominated films such as Away From Her and Eastern Promises. Overall, Corus has contributed more than $327 million in licence fees paid to independent producers and has triggered over $1 billion in original, independent Canadian production.
The Company’s production arm, Nelvana Studio, produces a stable of award-winning and globally renowned brands – from literary classics Babar and Franklin to new shows such as Ruby Gloom and Di-Gata Defenders – that air on our kids’ services in Canada and in over 150 countries around the world.
Corus is committed to remaining at the forefront of innovation. Movie Central was the first service in Canada to offer subscription video on-demand and the first to launch a 24-7 high-definition service. Corus introduced the first on-demand service for kids, Treehouse On Demand, and now offers a range of on-demand services for YTV and Treehouse. Launched in 2006, Treehouse Direct became Canada’s first digital video download storefront for families. Corus has also acquired the Canadian rights to Nickelodeon’s digital content and partnered with iTunes, providing viewers with unprecedented multiplatform access to their favourite kids content.
The power and reach of Corus’ broadcasting assets also work to assist local organizations, charities and people in need through millions of dollars worth of donated air-time and services, fundraising and cash support each year.
Wherever consumers connect with Corus – on-air, online, via mobile or hand-held media device – we’re committed to ensuring that we offer audiences and customers the innovative content and the compelling entertainment experiences that they have come to expect from our brands and services.
Through the acquisition, licensing, development and production of Canadian television projects and millions of dollars of direct investment in Canadian film production, Corus Entertainment showcases content that resonates with our audiences and contributes to a sustainable and vibrant entertainment industry that is truly Canadian and globally competitive.
