SUNDANCE CHANNEL MARCH 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

(Toronto, Canada) Premiering on March 1, Sundance Channel will offer Canadian audiences award-winning, diverse and engaging films and innovative original programming. The schedule is built around six defined programming blocks anchored weeknights in prime time and on Saturday and Sunday nights.

SUNDANCE STAGE – MONDAYS
On Monday nights, Sundance Stage airs the award-winning Canadian series Slings & Arrows at 8 p.m. followed at 9 p.m. by some of Hollywood and theatre’s biggest names in American Film Theatre film adaptations. March titles include:

The Homecoming (1973) airs Monday, March 8 at 9 p.m.
The Maids (1975) airs Monday, March 15 at 9 p.m.
Rhinoceros (1974) airs on Monday, March 22 at 9 p.m.
Luther (1973) airs Monday, March 29 at 9 p.m.


CRITIC’S CHOICE – TUESDAYS
The Tuesday night block, Critics Choice bows in with two back-to-back episodes of the ultimate Hollywood insider show In the House with Guber and Bart, followed by a critically acclaimed film chosen from film festivals around the globe.

In The House with Guber and Bart
Peter Bart
, editor-in-chief of Variety and Peter Guber, veteran film producer, host this new half-hour entertainment news series. Both are Hollywood insiders who provide lively and insightful opinions on pop-culture trends while interviewing directors, actors and filmmakers, who are often old friends.

Episode 1: Invictus/A Single Man premieres Tuesday, March 2 at 8 p.m.
Morgan Freeman
is in studio to discuss his role as Nelson Mandela in Clint Eastwood’s political drama Invictus. Tom Ford talks about his directorial debut in A Single Man.

Episode 2: Precious/Nine/The Lovely Bones airs Tuesday, March 2 at 8:30 p.m.
Director Lee Daniels and newcomer, actress Gabourey Sidibe are in studio to discuss their experience making Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Director Rob Marshall talks about his latest film Nine, then Stanley Tucci drops by to chat about his role as a serial killer in The Lovely Bones.

SUNDANCE SERIES - WEDNESDAYS

Wednesday nights are dedicated to Sundance Series featuring the best of Sundance-produced original productions.

The Lazy Environmentalist
The Lazy Environmentalist follows host Josh Dorfman as he enlightens and encourages the laziest and most wasteful to get involved in saving the planet.

Episode 1: The Lazy Family/The Lazy Pet Groomer premieres Wednesday, March 3 at 8 p.m.
Joined by Dave Chameides, a waste expert, Josh pays a visit to the Martinez family, a family of four with a recycling problem, and provides them with practical solutions to reduce the family’s garbage output. Then, Dawn Berens, owner of a successful dog grooming, daycare and boarding business, learns that some products she uses are harmful to the environment and the animals.

Episode 2: The Lazy Stylist/The Lazy Principal airs Wednesday, March 10 at 8 p.m.
Josh visits Wendell Haskins, a fashion stylist for rock stars, who doesn’t believe green clothing can fit the rock star image. Later Josh visits Principal James Haddad to help him with green initiatives that students will enjoy.

Episode 3: The Lazy Interior Designer/ The Lazy Bride airs Wednesday, March 17 at 8 p.m.
Josh encourages New York interior designer Rob Passal to try green options in upholstery, textiles and lacquers. Then Dana Morgan, an earth-friendly event planner, provides tips and tricks to couple Michelle Poor and Jason Rubenstein on how to make their upcoming wedding green with eco-friendly food, décor, and party favours.

Man Shops Globe
Keith Johnson is the buyer-at-large for Anthropologie, the women’s lifestyle retail store, who travels the world searching for hidden treasures in Man Shops Globe.

Episode 1: Man Shops Globe - France premieres Wednesday, March 3 at 8:30 p.m.
The flea markets of Paris, France are a feast for the eyes; unfortunately the pricing is just as eye-popping. Johnson makes a trip to Avignon, Provence where he dashes through an antiques show hoping to find forgotten treasures.

Episode 2: Man Shops Globe – South Africa airs Wednesday, March 10 at 8:30 p.m.
While in South Africa, Johnson finds animal inspired pieces. There are bird’s nest-inspired vases and beaded animal sculptures.

Episode 3: Man Shops Globe – Turkey airs Wednesday, March 17 at 8:30 p.m.
Johnson is in the bustling metropolis Istanbul. He’s searching for tapestries and fabrics and there are many dazzling pieces to choose from.

Brick City
Brick City is a five-part documentary that follows the triumphs and struggles of everyday citizens in Newark, New Jersey.

Episode 1: Summer Is Ours airs Wednesday, March 3 at 10 p.m.
Newark is leading the country in homicide reduction, but with summer 2008 approaching and last summer’s triple murder, execution style, Mayor Cory Booker and Police Directory Garry McCarthy are implementing new programs and systems to keep summer safe. Blood member Jayda and Crip member Creep are delighted to learn Jayda’s pregnant, but parts of her past are resurfacing and threatening their future.

Episode 2: Struggle airs Wednesday, March 10 at 10 p.m.
With Jayda in jail, Creep takes care of their children while his employer at the Integrity House, a respected therapeutic centre, contacts authorities on Jayda’s behalf. Mayor Booker is met with scepticism and criticism at a trade and housing public ceremony, and Garry delivers promising numbers on the decline of homicides.

Episode 3: Central airs Wednesday, March 17 at 10 p.m.
The new high school, Central High School, has taken 10 years and $100 million to build, but it might not be completed for the start of the school year and it’s already July, which sends Principal Ras Baraka and Vice Principal Todd Warren scrambling for a contingency plan.


SONIC SCREEN – THURSDAYS
Thursday nights are all about music with Sonic Screen, featuring the series Music Makers, two episodes of 360 Sessions and London Live with performances and interviews with today’s hottest and up-and-coming musical stars.

Music Makers
This series of specials, filmed from concerts starting in September 2009, feature some of the top contemporary artists performing intimate sets in front of 250 people, in the beautiful setting of the Hurlingham Club in London. Each one hour concert contains some of the artist’s most memorable tracks as well as a brief conversation about the history behind each song. Music Makers premieres Thursday, March 4 at 8 p.m.
with recording artist Mark Knopfler.

360 Sessions
In this unique 13 half hour series, music artists are filmed in major cities around the world including New York, LA, London, Cardiff and Copenhagen. Each artist presents four acoustic tracks, personal interviews and a self-filmed view into their world. Artists in the series include Snoop Dogg, Stereophonics and Little Boots. 360 Sessions premieres Thursday, March 4 at 9 p.m.
with recording artist David Gray and 9:30 p.m.
with Daniel Merriweather.

London Live
Direct from the heart of London’s live music scene, this dynamic music program features the world’s hottest artists of today and tomorrow. The half hour series combines exceptional live performances from today’s greatest artists with exclusive interviews. Some of the acts that have performed to date include Lady Gaga, Groove Armada, Maroon 5, Fergie, Manic Street Preachers, Akon, Kate Nash, Kaiser Chiefs and K T Tunstall. London Live premieres Thursday, March 4 at 10 p.m.


FRIDAY NIGHTS

Viewers can enjoy the insightful documentary Theatreland on Friday nights followed by a film.

Theatreland
Airing Fridays at 8 p.m.
beginning March 5, Theatreland covers six exciting months in one of London’s thriving playhouses, the historic Theatre Royal Haymarket. The series goes backstage to explore the theatre from all angles, from the stage hands and actors to the arrival of a new artistic director, Sean Mathias. Preparing for his first two productions, Mathias brings actor Patrick Stewart on board to star in Waiting for Godot with Sir Ian McKellen, while working on his next production – the first-ever theatrical adaptation of Truman Capote’s iconic tale of a girl in New York City, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Midnight Snack showcases films that have earned a loyal cult following over the years. March titles include:

Lianna (1983) premieres Saturday, March 20 at midnight
Naked Lunch (1991) premieres Saturday, March 27 at midnight


ASIA EXTREME – SUNDAYS
Sundays at midnight, Asia Extreme goes to the Far East to find the new wave of innovative filmmakers who are reinvigorating the world of genre movies. March titles include:
